hello Jacob sorry for the delay in replying to your invitation to become friends, but I am new to the internet and am careful as I go. I love field trips and collecting stone. Fossils, gems doesn't matter it is all beautiful I am not big on idle chatter but focused conversation is great. please be patient, my replys may be time consuming but I eventually get there.
Have you found out anything about cutting and polishing yet? I have a Rock Rascal (this is a 6 inch, fine saw for cutting small stones. I have a 10 inch regular cement saw from the local hardware store to cut larger pieces (it works just as well as the more expensive lapidary saws, only it is a much thicker blade so you should not use it on expensive material.
I do have a few cabbing machines but my favorite is called a Genie. It has 6 wheels that vary in grit. This means that you can begin with a rough stone on the first wheel and grind away any lumps and points that you don't want. You continue down the row shaping and polishing until you are happy with it. the last two are mainly for polish to a nice shine.
If you have never tried it, you should because you will love it. Keep on the look out for used machines as to buy one brand new is quite expensive! Google "used Lapidary Equipment" You could start out with the pixie. Ita the same as my genie only smaller and cheaper. (made by Diamond Pacific)
I am looking for a used Titan now but have had no luck in finding on in my price range yet
I hope this help a little and if you have more Question let me know and I will tell you what I can!

Hello Jacob. It's a pleasure to meet someone from Africa. I trust you have interesting rocks, minerals & fossil specimens to talk about. Hope to hear from you soon. Victor
I'm not one to talk because I don't have any rock pictures posted (yet). But you are a mystery man. What are you interested in? Africa being the site of the Great Rift, there certainly are a lot of rocks and minerals there. Do you collect? Paulette
