It looks like a piece of obsidian to me. SOme forms of obsidion can contain small amounts of iron which would explain the magnet sticking

Actually Kevin, second hand stores, flea markets and even garage sales are very good places to find such things as minerals, rocks, and what you found. It's usually a bonus as their not lookin for profit and you pay little.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for the note - hope you're staying warm up in Canada. I love Canada - great country to prospect.

Well, yes I would love it to be obsidian but I found it along a paved path in the dirt near a creek in my neighborhood. It is a "rock out of place" like most of the things I find. That makes them harder to identify. I mentioned to Kirt the research adventure this shard took me on. It has qualities like obsidian and the magnet attracting thing...would iron traces rust? Nickel also attracts, there are others, I just can't recall at the moment.

Thanks for the friendly greeting, Kevin. It'll take me awhile to find my way around but after I do, I'll share some photos of a few pieces I've collected. We live in Northern Michigan and I get to collect some here, but not quite the way it was when we lived in the Southwest. I'm hoping to make a trip to Bancroft one of these days. I hear the collecting is pretty good and the scenery is even better (smile).
